Should you hire a car by the day or by the month?

Visitors rent a car by the day for trips beyond the songthaew routes: the beaches south of the city, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, or a day in Bang Saray. Long-stay residents often rent by the month instead of buying, especially when they live in East Pattaya or Na Jomtien, where public transport is thinner and the beach and shops are a drive away.

What should you check before you rent a car?

Make sure your driving licence is valid for driving in Thailand, and carry it with your passport.
Ask what the insurance covers and what you would pay after an accident.
Photograph the car all round at pick-up, including the fuel gauge and mileage.
Agree the fuel policy and the return time and place.
Remember that Thailand drives on the left.

Do you need a car when you rent a house or villa?
